Ranch meaning, in general, any real world dwelling probably not involving full care board. Kind of a rural voice of real horse owners, trainers, traders, auction owners, rodeo contractors, etc.. all of us who have taken a verbal beating and called greedy ass hats. Back at the Ranch contributors, moderators, subjects, and so on, are pro-horse, pro-owner, and pro-slaughter.
Back at the Ranch was formed by a group of like minded horse / livestock owners. It is a place for us to try to educate, a place to vent our frustrations with the current equine industry, a place to share humor and snark, and in general try to open the eyes of the public who seem to be anti-agriculture.We do have a section for comments of course, and if you would like to email us you can do so directly or through the contact us form. We like to hear from our readers. I hope you enjoy reading our blog as much as I enjoy managing it.

Steve Hindi- Shark? I say bottom feeder.....

We have an old saying in my part of the country: A man who lies to you once will lie as many times as you let him. Keep that in mind as we continue our discussion.

We all go through times in our lives when, for one reason or another, we evaluate what we stand for. Maybe return to things we thought we left behind. Interests we put on a back burner while life made other plans are renewed and we remember what they meant to us. Such is the case for me and rodeo.
The total lack of interest in Dually’s ordeal by PETA started this project. I am not a barrel racer by profession but the feel of good barrel horse shutting down to rate the barrel and leaving a tight corner is pretty far up there on my list of “reasons we raise nice horses” and even though I have no desire to ride one, I love to watch a good bronc work…..so I kind of got back to rodeo…….started researching some stock and stock contractors…….trying to find information on some great stockman and great bucking horses…….this led me to a new (new to me) friend and champion of our maligned and maltreated livestock.
STEVE HINDi:
Mentioned in this article pulled from the (you guessed it) Steve Hindi web site
http://www.sharkonline.org/ . Writing for this blogspot has been a learning experience for me. I have learned to ALWAYS give the website who supplied in the information used in my opinions. I don’t want anyone to think I am making this up as I go. I suspect that’s true of some the head cases in this article but…………
This entry is made in response to a comment referring to another article “exposing" the horrors of rodeo originally titled Godless in Chicago, As in Rodeo Animals Haven’t Got a Prayer. The commenter on that article asked why, if rodeo cruelty existed in such common rampant style, why it was never documented on TV and in newspaper articles. Here’s the explanation.

The Corrupt Economics of Rodeo By Rob Sherman Chicago Now Blog
Rodeos buy lots of newspaper ads in the days before an event to promote the event to attract a crowd. There is a "professional courtesy" that says you don't mess with your advertisers or they won't be your advertisers any more.
Indeed, that's precisely why rodeos buy lots of newspaper and TV ads: Insurance against getting exposed for engaging in animal abuse for huge profits.
It's no different than why so many large corporations, such as Comcast, Commonwealth Edison, and unions, such as teachers unions and firefighter unions, "sponsor" incumbent legislators in Springfield (the capitol of Illinois for those of you who wrote in from elsewhere) with campaign contributions literally in the tens of thousands of dollars. They know that legislators have the power to end unfair policies and practices which unjustly enrich these groups and cost taxpayers tens of millions of dollars each year. They are simply, and literally, buying protection for their unfair practices
.
So there you have it…… rodeo has everyone in the media on the take ……..Except our smiling friend(pictured above) Steve Hindi … And while the sport of rodeo has been buying off the media they have also been infiltrating charities with money to keep them and the communities they work within quiet too………

In addition, rodeos are often the vehicle used by major local charitable organizations as a fund-raiser event. The Wauconda Chamber of Commerce states, on page 11 of their June newsletter, that "The annual rodeo is the Chamber's largest fundraiser." If any newspaper were to criticize the Wauconda Rodeo as cruel and unnecessary, the charitable organization would complain.
Finally, most people, particularly most people in the rodeo audience and, quite frankly, most journalists, simply don't realize that rodeo is animal abuse for entertainment and profit. It never occurs to most people that what they regard as an entertaining and fun animal performance is actually animals squirming and writhing in agony from abuse and torture that has just occurred but been cleverly concealed from the audience, and that when the animals are racing across the arena, they actually are simply trying to run away to escape further mistreatment. That's why we need people like Steve Hindi and SHARK (SHowing Animals Respect and Kindness) to expose what's going on, for the eventual protection of animals, and to inform journalists like me so that I can inform you.

So Mr. Sherman ends his glowing although poorly informed tribute to this special man.
Did I mention researching this blog has been a learning experience for me?
Well it has. Here is what else I was able to learn about Steve Hindi….No comment from me…..I’ll just post a little……let you go visit the sites if you desire……..read a little or lot…..I think you can form an opinion……

This site goes into Steve Hindi’s personal life as well as the personal lives of several other prominent animal activists. http://www.theharryrowellfamily.org/stevehindi.htm . It is interesting reading if you feel the personalities and private lives of these people have bearing on their credibility and motives as I do.
This web site lets us in on the mind set of this man’s peers and supporters

The website authors are asking you to send help and correspondence to encourage these “martyrs”.

I’ll just leave you with Steve Hindi’s rendition of the Cowboy Prayer….His comments are in bold. Political debate, difference of opinion, or questioning the accuracy of one’s facts is one thing but demeaning an act of religious respect (whether you agree with context or not)…….well you be the judge…….
Our Heavenly Father,
We have paused in the midst of this Rodeo, mindful of you and all the blessings you've bestowed upon us.
Lordy yes! Where else could we get a deal like this? We get to wrap ourselves in the American flag, kick the living hell out of your creatures and still pretend to be fine Christians at cowboy church. Don't that beat all?
You see, Lord, there is no need for you to bless us with compassion for your creatures.

We pray Lord that you be with each of us and especially with the contestants in this arena as we pray that you will guide us in life's arena.
Guide us to ever more tame domesticated victims that we can taunt, maim, injure and kill in our fantasy of being little "John Waynes."
We don't ask you for any special favors Lord.
But of course, if you would let us get away with just a little more cruelty and corruption we'd be much obliged.
We don't ask that you always make it rain when we need it, nor do we ask that you always let the sun shine.
No sir. We just ask that you keep public officials corrupt enough to hand over tax dollars and have a blind eye to criminal abuse and let us get away with whatever we want. Can anyone spell H-Y-P-O-C-R-I-S-Y?
We don't always ask for the calf that runs straight, nor do we shun the one that won't lay.
Nah, we'll just kick the crap out of them to make 'em run like hell the next time.
We don't ask to draw round the chute fighting horse nor condemn the ride not bringing pay.
Nope. No need to condemn them because we can spike them, shock them, twist and rake their tails, and choke and drag them. We figure that if we nail 'em a few dozen times before they go out again, they'll buck just fine!
We just pray Lord that you help us, so we may live our lives in such a manner, that when it comes time to make that last ride to the country up there, where the water runs, cool, clear and deep and where the grass grows stirrup high, lush and green, that you will tell us, as our last Judge, that our entry fees are paid.
Oh yea, oh yea. Nothin' but rodeo up there in the heavens. Endless supplies of calves and steers and horses and bulls to harass and mutilate and shock and spur and spike. Glory be on high!
Amen.
And be sure to visit his website dealing with the sex slave trade (the use of the Brokeback Mountain theatre posters is a nice touch)

Warning: if you have any sentiment toward the western lifestyle or pride in the culture that gave us the root of stock horse breeds and the stock seat style of performance horsemanship as well as rodeo this website and the “literature” it contains may be very hard on your blood pressure. As most true “animal people” eventually do Mr. Hindi has indeed proven he is not an experienced horsemen of any sort……..I’ll let you form you own opinions on what sort of man he really is…….
I will get the great stock and stock contractors a little better next week……….I had to vent a little first……it makes it easier for me to be happier next time….

  1. Why is it that these people always think they're above the law? When a group has a list of those incarcerated, that's a pretty fair sign that there is something wrong.
I read partway through the last link, and really didn't understand why the person even bothered posting it. But you're right, the poster was really nice:)

  2. Thanks for the publicity for my web site, Godless in Chicago.

My response to your blog entry is entitled, "Rodeo apologist attempts to smear Steve Hindi," and can be read here:

  3. I don't see a smear attempt, Mr. Sherman. Mr. Hindi, was in fact, in jail in 1996, and is on the list posted here. The rest of the information posted by the Blog host is here, as stated, for those interested to read and judge for ourselves.
On a side note, I am glad I do not live in Illinois...it seems to be a real den of corruption!

  4. Mr. Sherman we never apologized for the rodeo, there is nothing to apologize for. I did get a chuckle out of your new article though. The conspiracy theory about court and criminal records was a lot of fun, I just love a good paranoid conspiracy theory.

  6. Rather then conduct smear campaigns against people who are only exercising their write to free speech, why don't you come up with a decent argument as to why we should continue the killing and injuring of horses and calves in rodeos?

Furthermore, just because some animal welfare advocates have served time for their beliefs, it doesn't mean their credibility is shot. Quite the contrary actually.

Frankly I've never been in jail nor prosecuted so save your energy and time researching me. Personally, I don't have the guts to break the law to make a point. However I also strongly disagree with using animals in rodeos for some barbaric form of entertainment to those who will pay. Not all animal welfare advocates are the same yet we still have a common goal. Speaking for those who can't speak for themselves.

I don't see anyone saying you ranch types shouldn't be continuing whatever it is you do on the ranch. But the rodeo, like the circus, is in my sights and I plan on making it very uncool to attend one.

    ReplyDelete
  7. I don't have a problem with you making it very "uncool" for someone to attend a circus or rodeo if you feel so strongly against it. and the fact that you are working within the parameters of the law to acheive that goal is admirable.
the world is made up of many types of people, sharing many different views. some, like you, feel that rodeo, and the circus are barbaric forms of entertainment, and that is certainly your right. others do not share your views.
you have every right to stay away from these events, and as long as they are legal, and those who enjoy them should be able to.
i don't believe that there is an intent to conduct a smear campaign, but rather to share information that was found while researching something else.
there are a lot of things i find reprehensible and disgusting, many of them having to do with human beings. i spend a lot of my time fighting against them. i do not condone the mistreatment of animals either, but when groups think nothing of injuring humans in their quest to protect animals, then i do think something is very wrong.
i try to be fair, and was reading on the shark site about the rodeo, and as always, was surprised at the comments that were made and left unchecked. suggestions to burn the coca cola plant down, wishes that other humans would die, etc., just don't seem to fit in with the agenda of those who profess to love animals. yet they seem to have no problem hating humans or wishing to do harm to those who are doing nothing other than going to work every day.
and there is a difference between serving time for one's beliefs and going to jail for breaking the law. many people have learned to protest peacefully within the boundaries of the law. but then, these are the ones who do not seem to feel the need to have attention drawn to themselves, their interest is more on the cause itself.

  8. Sensationalizing untrue information shoots anyone's credibility with me. Flank straps do not make gentle horses or bulls buck. All of the infomation Mr. Hindi has printed about why broncs and bulls buck is totally false. If it were true I'd buy a flank strap, start selling some of the free Craigs list horse as broncs, get rich and so would every stock contractor going down the road.

If you actually had read Rob Sherman's response it was way more about trying to distance Mr. Hindi from the taking the fall for a cause you find so commendable than proving any of their points. You and the vegan website were extremely proud of his conviction and he and Mr. Sherman were busy trying to dog out of it. Even to the point of blaming the Illinois court system. You think he hung the moon and he's yelling set up.....How funny.....

The information on stock contractors is comming. The information will mean nothing to you anyway. But thanks for voicing your opinion. The opinions voiced here continuely add to subjects for me to exercise my right of free speech about. Difference being I have been there done that got a tee shirt. I didn't get my information on horses from an HSUS study. I have an opinion on them too. Did you read it?

Yes, you are infringing on my right to "ranch" I start barrel horses to resell, shutting down rodeo is trade infringement of sorts.

Oh crap that means I have to get a real job.....according to Mr. Hindi.

  9. I call myself an animal lover and when I say an animal lover, I mean that in the true sense. You can say you love animals but you don't really mean it, or you may think you do really love animals and think some treatment of animals is acceptable when infact it is animal cruelty. For example, electro-shocking horses to bolt, roping a small animal around its neck, until it is slammed to the ground (causing pain and suffering, broken bones-neck, rope burns), tormenting animals to the point that you distress them so much, they just want to run away from the abuser. This is not true love or respect towards an animal, in staged rodeo events. Animals are easily exploited and we as decent human beings need to protect them from exploitation and abuse for money. You can only truly love an animal if you treat it kind and gentle and gain its trust. You can only truly love an animal if you provide for it, respect it and be loyal to it to the last beat of your heart. Just because animals are a different species it does not give us the right to exploit them any way we see fit. Steve Hindi was a hunter before but he changed and people do change. He may have been to prison, but he went to prison for a noble cause, because he believed the pigeon shoots were cruel, immoral and totally unnecessary. The killing of pigeons just for FUN is obscene. Killing hundreds or thousands of birds for fun is obscene. Why would anyone wish to spend money doing this? Why not donate this money to a worthwhile cause, instead of butchering birds, just for fun. What is the purpose in this? Animals are butchered all around the world, without a shadow of remorse, without a shred of compassion towards them. Perhaps some people need to look in the mirror and look deep into their soul. Animals are the true innocents and the human race have a lot to learn from them.

  10. Anonymous... your to funny... dang thanks for the laugh. Now for the bird killing.. Guess I will not go into that.. I AM A BIRD KILLER.. I kill everyone I can here on the ranch if they are making mud nests on my rafters and in the shop and barn.. yap.... KILL THEM DEAD.
But for rodeo.. that is a sport that has been around as long as cowboys.. ya cowboys.. the people that came to the west and settled it, it is a sport among sports. and I only wish i had as good a life as the rodeo stock. work for 6 to 10 sec. and then your off work for a week or so and get all the food and water you can handle. what a life. And the stock is very well taken care of.. that is how the contractor makes his living and so his stock comes before himself even. You do not know nothing other then big city living i am sure.. where back east are you from????? how high up is your apt or condo????
you anti's are a joke.... you go out and trun horses loose at rodeo's.. they run into the roads and bang... hit by cars.. broke legs... bulls turned loose... jumping into windows of cars.... stores.... bang.. dead... save the people that the bull is headed for.... yap.. you sure did them bulls and horses a good favior now dident you.

  11. I am not anti-ranchers or the West and I am not from the city. I am a country girl, born and bred, but not from where you think! I am glad that I made you laugh at my comments, at least I got some reaction from you. I have a deep respect for the West, it's history and it's making. That is why I am against animal cruelty and exploitation. A true cowboy will understand this, he knows that it is important to look after nature, (the animals, environment and plants). I understand that rodeos have been around for many years, but it has now become big money and that is all that is important. Money. Of course they have to look after their stock, they would be stupid not to. As for you shooting all those birds dead because they nest on your rafters, I think that's mean. There are many things you can do to stop them from nesting on your roof, you do not have to shoot them DEAD. Imagine a world with no birds, no singing or chirping, that would be sad world. Birds enrich our lives by their singing.
Going back to the rodeos, I know if someone threw a rope round my neck and slammed me to the ground I would be in pain. To then drag me around on the floor, scrapping my skin on stones and dirt would be even more pain. Animals are no different, they also feel pain, they feel fear and they feel distress. We all have to accept this and even though this carried on many, many years ago, it does not mean it has to carry on. I can only speak from my own experience, I was born and bred in the country, I love the country (hate the city) I love nature and I truly love and respect animals. 1. Do you realize that roping is a NECESSARY skill if you are managing cattle? Just what are you going to do when a calf sickens in the middle of your pasture in the summer? Drive out there (good luck, I'll look sadly down on your wreckage from the back of my horse), or trail the calf miles to corral, putting it through excessive stress, so that by the time you load the calf in a trailer and bump your way down 80 miles of country roads to get the vet, your calf is DEAD?? Unless you're excessively stupid, you'll realize that the answer is NO. You will ride out there on your horse, with medicine in your saddle bag, and rope the calf, so that you can doctor it in the pasture, causing it minimal stress and allowing it to go back to nursing its momma asap. And how will you know how to rope a calf off the back of a horse?? Hmmm?? Because you have taken hours and hours and hours and days and days and days to practice roping calves and steers in the arena. Why don't you take a look at saddle horses and roping steers after a rodeo? Will you find poor, neglected, torn to bits, injured animals? NO WAY! You will find some of the best and most well fed stock you can see anywhere. These animals are the bread and butter of stock contractors. You wouldn't rent your Mercedes to someone who was going to run it into a wall and ruin it, right? Stock contractors would absolutely not bring their prized and valuable animals to rodeos if the animals were going to be injured or killed. Sharkonline takes videos of unforeseen and rare accidents out of context and then broadcasts them as if that is the norm. Rodeo people ARE real cowboys. They are the ones that leave the rodeo and drive miles and miles to remote ranches where they employ the skills and knowledge of their parents and grandparents and great-grandparents to manage cattle in the great wide open. There seems to be this notion that "rodeo people" are somehow a different breed of cruel rednecks. NOT TRUE. Look at the bios of most professors of Agricultural Science at top universities - MANY have ties to rodeo. Ask the Montana and Wyoming ranchers, who raise five hundred head of cattle for a living, if they know anything about rodeo, and I guarantee, they will be intimately connected with it in some way. You may have been born in the country, but you obviously have ZERO real knowledge of what rodeo is or what it entails

If that's the way we should think, then we should NEVER remove a young animal from it's mother.....who has a dog or a cat or any other pet that was taken away from it's mother? Can you imagine how cruel that was to do such a thing? Yes, that was sarcastically said!

But these animals are tougher than we are. They have to be to survive in the wild (as in their "history"). Ever seen two stallions fight for mares? Some of the well placed kicks...some of the nasty bites.....some of the nasty head swings? Not even CLOSE to what a stock prod feels like....and yes...I've been "zapped" by a stock prod, sure wakes you up! Ever seen horses running free in a field? You might be quite amazed to know that they will actually buck on their own while they are enjoying the great outdoors!! Wow!! Any "animal rights activists" ride horses? You do??? Are you not "making" the horse do something it might not want to do? How many riding accidents have occurred and injured horses...........

Could you make a pair of shoes out of human skin? Nope....can you out of cow hide? Well, that shows you the difference in the thickness of animal hides and how tough it is.

I am not saying this to create an excuse for animal abuse. I am saying this to make one think about where the line is in using the natural ability of an animal and abuse! If "making" an animal do something is abuse...then ALL animals should be let go, including pets and let them enjoy the free world! But, you CANNOT try to decide abuse by putting "yourself" in the animals position. They DON'T think like us, they are MUCH tougher than us.....us humans are actually quite "whimpy" compared to animals.

    1. Exactly! Not only in a physical sense, but in a psychological sense. For example, they will see a rider using a crop or a whip on a horse and say "oh how cruel, how would you like if your mom used a whip on you?? The horse will be terrified of you". I just want to scream at them that horses don't process the world like humans.Horses are not animals that operate on TRUST alone; they must ALSO accept the LEADERSHIP of their rider. In the wild, or in the herd, horses always have a leader and a strict hierarchy. This is normal and comfortable for horses. And what does the "leader" do when another horse tried to get in his space? He kicks bites and generally moves the other horse out of his space with a hundred times the force that a human can exert. When humans use a crop appropriately, they are FITTING INTO THE HORSE'S natural psychology and understanding of the world by asserting THEIR LEADERSHIP. If a person does not assert leadership, the horse will assume it and do whatever he wants, including bucking the rider off! Animal rights people do not understand that animals "think" differently than humans, and to me, their ignorance is actually quite disrespectful of animals. I agree with all of the points in your post! If we really care about animals we WON'T humanize them, but interact with them in a way that makes sense according to their biology and psychology.
