Ranch meaning, in general, any real world dwelling probably not involving full care board. Kind of a rural voice of real horse owners, trainers, traders, auction owners, rodeo contractors, etc.. all of us who have taken a verbal beating and called greedy ass hats. Back at the Ranch contributors, moderators, subjects, and so on, are pro-horse, pro-owner, and pro-slaughter.
Back at the Ranch was formed by a group of like minded horse / livestock owners. It is a place for us to try to educate, a place to vent our frustrations with the current equine industry, a place to share humor and snark, and in general try to open the eyes of the public who seem to be anti-agriculture.We do have a section for comments of course, and if you would like to email us you can do so directly or through the contact us form. We like to hear from our readers. I hope you enjoy reading our blog as much as I enjoy managing it.
Sincerely,

July 31st...

With the up coming full enactment of the EU’s drug requirement in horses intended for food I am wondering, possibly predicting, a few things.... Remember we have all been given this information more than 6 months ago.

(1) I have already read some articles by vets on this, the US will very likely research and begin putting withdrawal times on drugs for horses like they do for cattle and other “intended for food livestock”.
(2) Will the price per pound on qualifying horses go up? We are told so few will pass the requirements meaning lower supply for the same demand. Heck demand may even go up since people will feel horse meat is now safe to eat.
Lately I’ve been seeing a lot of free weanlings and yearlings. I think it won’t be long (maybe is already happening) before people start picking them up for the feed lot. The better ones may be picked out of the herd for riders etc... and the others go on the big truck with all papers in order. If the per pound price is up and a person has the farm resources, keeping a weanling for 2 to 3 yrs would still be lucrative. We do it with our naturally raised beef steers, why not naturally raised equine? Remember there will be a list of qualified drugs and there is already a list of 6 month withdrawal drugs.
With all of the bred broodmares for sale cheap or free I don’t suppose it would be at all hard to have a herd for next to nothing and let them breed. I do believe there will be horses bred strictly for meat. I do believe culls will still go to the plant, they’ll just spend more time on the feed lot. Keeping records is all it will require.
I have a 14 yr old gelding whom I’ve owned his entire life. He would meet the requirements and he has not been neglected in any way. In fact I would venture to say he is healthier than those who have been over de-wormed and given drugs that some people feel are necessary for all horses and feel it is abusive to not pump poisons and toxins into them.

(3) Some horses will go to the unregulated plants in Mexico. We know they already are but will that number increase? Will the unqualified horse be even cheaper and more obtainable for that market now? Will the NAHSC be able to help them? I certainly don’t believe they will but they will be patting themselves on the back and taking credit for the EU regulating food safety for their citizens. Do they not know that’s all it is about? It is not for the welfare of horses. Why on earth do they think they have had any hand in what other Countries allow their people to eat or not?
John, Vicki, Alex, and the rest of you knot heads, Stop taking credit where it is not yours to take. You already get credit for the suffering of many horses, isn’t that enough for you?
What’s next, you ego maniacal morons? Gonna jump on the HSUS band wagon and fight for no animal ownership just guardianship? Make it possible for Rover to sue their guardian in a court of law over a dog food dispute, or over the humiliation of having your nose rubbed in it when you had an accident on the carpet...

Better be careful I know several horses who would start a class action suite against you for much of their suffering.

Really, How hard is this? I keep these records for the entire time I own a horse just for my own personal use, it wouldn't be a big deal for 6 months.

Comment - #3 under Part 2 History. (see type that I have changed to blue and red) If they ask the question in that manner I assume many horses that have been given drugs on the prohibited list will pass without the owner ever having to lie. hmmmm?

  1. I'm hearing those three words "to your knowledge" will become quite a loophole.....we'll see

  2. "To your knowledge" and "within the past 180 days".
They even ask that of the banned drugs. So if I have a horse that had bute 12 months ago and none since then I can answer honestly No he has not had any banned drugs within 180 days.
Doesn't seem to me they are really watching out for their people after all.

  3. "To your knowledge" and "within the past 180 days".. IS going to be the main thing.. For all of my 28 head here on the ranch I can circle..."NO".. Not lie.. Be 100% truthful.. and yes I do believe that the price for killer horses will go up..
There will be more horses bred and raised for Meat. "WHY"... because the price of that meat horses is going to be higher then most will be getting for a saddle horse.
I am not sure if the FOB's and ABR people have given much thought to what this will mean for the horse. Just like they did not think when they pushed and got the slaughter plants closed down here in the U S. it would mean that horses then would go to Canada and Mexico.
I believe that research will now be done to find out what the withdrawal time will be for many drugs given to horses... horses have been part of the food chain always and I am sure they will continue to be.

  4. J. Doe, I agree. Some of the FOB's are already catching on-better late than never, I suppose, but as usual, bad, bad, bad, for the horses involved. What they have accomplished is exactly what we have predicted- a new Slaughter market. Horses raised specifically to meet the EU standards, and thus, bring in a better price. Some have already begun pulling "clean" horses, and will be ready to go. This is how it always goes, and the "horse lovers" just don't get it. No matter what is in place, there will be a way around it. It happened with "ending Slaughter in America", it will happen with these regulations. We knew there would be a loophole, and now we've seen what that is.

  5. This has been set up from the get go for the exporter/importers and the plants to find a way to keep meeting their contract tonnage.

The contaminated meat scare tactic was a brain child of the anti-slaughter movement in a vain attempt to "erase" the demand. Anyone with half an ounce of logic could see the writing on the wall here.

First people who have enjoyed eating horsemeat will continue to enjoy it. How many e-coli scares have I heard about and I still eat my steaks rare, and I mean "a good vet could save him" rare?

Second, the plant owners, exporters, and inspectors have worded and worked this around so the demand can still be met. The time frame has insured that.

How many "oil refinery" mishaps does it take for some people to learn any excuse for a shorter supply, increased cost, or ANY real or imagined blig in the flow of production is going cause a jump in price.

The cattle industry has been making a profit on .90 fat steers at 30 months of age for years. I don't forsee it being all that difficult to achieve with horses.

RH1 you are So right! but it is fun pointing it out in the official paperwork lol.
Wonder what the next move will be? What new tortures for the horses will they come up with?
Sadly they haven't got an ounce of sense in the entire group added together much less one of them. If they had they would have seen the writing on the wall that we have pointed out to them since the beginning of their "quest".

  7. Thought you should all read this:

  8. Well, I’m tired of waiting and you have taken all the fun out of posting here. I guess Vicki is right that this site only has one person who resides here, posting this outlandish stuff and then answering their own postings. Some people just like to hear themselves talk. So since this site is so irreverent I will have my say then not waste my time to check here again, so no need to reply.

So it does seem that Horse Haters have finally gotten the message that there is no money to be made in the selling of horses for human consumption. Maybe they have finally realized that the raising and caring for a horse involves a lot of money and the market is in no way big enough to support the expense of raising horses for slaughter. I was going to go on more on this subject but then no one will read it and it won’t matter anyway, so I won’t say anymore about this.

But I do want to tell you why I posted “Anonymous” and that was because the one and only time I posted here, I was verbally attacked by someone who said they posted as “Anonymous” because they were afraid that a person like me (a Horse Lover, who won’t even kill a spider) would find out where they lived and burn their house down. ME!!!!! So I thought, if they think I, a compassionate horse lover, would do something like that, then I had better watch myself since one of the Horse Haters might come after me. Thus, the Anonymous posting. Just thought I’d explain, not that it matters at this site anymore. So Good-bye and farewell!

  9. Yes, Lynn you will come back, you came back this time to see if you got a response. I don't read AKA Grey Mane or Harlequins. It's about the same.

You came back not to explain anything but to insult someone or anyone because no notice was paid to your post. That very compassionate, graceful, and mature.

  10. Since Lynn has gone away, I know we're probably finished reading this, but I wanted to post an update of sorts. It seems some of the Anti's are now arguing about the effectiveness of the EU regulations. There's a Rescue that wants to start a group that will go to different Auctions and track the horses. Another Rescue says this is a waste of time, and that business as usual is continuing despite the regulations that were going to stop Slaughter in it's tracks. (I tend to agree by the way). The Rescue disagreeing states that there are ways to get around the paperwork, and that the regs don't hold the weight many thought they would, partially because of the wording. I have no problem if anyone wants to spend their time tracking papers instead of doing something else that I would consider more productive, but hey, if it makes sense to you, and makes you feel like you're making a difference-go for it. I guess the mindset is that with these individuals tracking the horses with paperwork, it will be known that these regs are being taken seriously, and thus there will be a push to have them enforced. It was mentioned that since these are EU regulations, and there is really no way to enforce them in the U.S., those who do not properly complete the paperwork have yet another out, but this was not considered a problem. It will be interesting to see how the new regs play out. I think we're seeing it. The Auction houses have the papers there, and let everyone know they need to be filled out. The "to the best of your knowledge" line is a pretty big safety net, and we all know paperwork has been fudged when convenient in the past. So, a watchdog group to track the horses? A waste of time? We'll see. But what stands out to me is how once again, these people can't seem to agree on too much, and when they don't the insults, and belittling comes out. Which, in a side note to Lynn, kind of backs up what people say about the extreme beahvior of some of these folks. And again-this does open up a new market for raising "clean" horses. Think it's not happening? It started when word of the regs came out. This is just my humble opinion, but all these regs will do is provide for a better Slaughter market for those who can consistently present clean horses. And there are those who are working on it. No money in horses for human consumption? I think these regs created a new niche.
